Diary kept by Private Charles H. Cooley of Brooklyn, N.Y. When he began the diary, Cooley was detailed to a printing office in Memphis, Tenn. He was ordered to Vicksburg, and in early March loaded the printing office onto a steamer. Entries are very brief. Some reveal his movements on the Mississippi River between Vicksburg to New Orleans. Entries include accounts of the celebration of the news of Lee's surrender and of the author hearing of Lincoln's death.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
